Intralogistics is faced with several big challenges, from efficiently capturing information and compiling orders to saving costs. In recent years, smart order picking methods have been providing digital support to warehouse employees. Of all these new technologies, pick-by-vision has proven to be especially fit for the future. But why?

Businesses expect ever more from their logistics processes. Putting efficient strategies into place is therefore vital, especially in large warehouses that handle a complex range of products. Order picking is becoming a key part of the logistics chain, as being able to smoothly process incoming orders can give a decisive competitive advantage.

Revolutionizing order picking with smart glasses

Digital transformation has been sweeping through all areas of the economy for many years now. The fast-paced world of logistics, in particular, revolves around humans and the flow of information. New technologies are playing a significant role here. These innovations make it possible to make data collection and processing procedures more efficient than ever.

Wearables are becoming an ever more important part of intralogistics. Pickers already benefit from the advantages of smart glasses. They offer massive potential in terms of boosting employee productivity and spreading information. As a result, more models of smart glasses with new functions are being launched every year. They aim to make warehouse work even easier and more ergonomic.

How Pick-by-Vision is helping the warehouse go digital

Although we live in an age of digitalization, human beings are still at the center of things. Cognitive intelligence and flexibility are essential in complex, fast-growing processes, meaning that humans are still a vital part of logistics processes. But when it comes to supporting staff, pick-by-vision offers much more than just visual process guidance. It combines the benefits of other order picking technologies like pick-by-voice and pick-by-light. This results in faster picking and an even more reliable material flow.

So how does Pick-by-Vision work?

  • The picker logs into the system at the start of their shift and automatically receives their first task.
  • A pair of WLAN-enabled smart glasses with integrated display provides the picker with up-to-date information about the pick (item, storage location, quantity, etc.) at the edge of their field of vision. This information guides the picker precisely through the process.
  • The picker scans the item’s barcode with a ring scanner. This is connected to the smart glasses via Bluetooth. Data is transferred to the warehouse management system in real-time, making it possible to record incorrect quantities and processing states immediately.
  • After confirming the pick, the picker is visually guided to the next position.

More benefits in summary:

  • Greater process reliability and reduced error rates
  • Hands-free
  • Flexible
  • Easy to learn
  • Contextual overlays
  • Quick integration thanks to standard interfaces
  • High acceptance among staff
